Half Bluff, Back Bay
oil/panel
14" x 18"
$400.00

Terry Houseworth found this great viewpoint from which to paint a bluff near the Muth Center at the Back Bay. I joined him late in the morning one day - too late unfortunately to complete my painting. The wind came up and spoiled the reflections I was working on. So I returned the next day to get them right.

Framed in a thick black frame.

Two Jutting Points
oil/canvas
11" x 14"
$400.00

A view of the Back Bay at Newport Beach. Trees and buildings top the nearest jutting point which is mostly in shadow. The painting uses atmospheric perspective to clarify the distance from foreground to horizon.

Back Bay #3
oil/canvas
12" x 16"
$400.00

My third attempt to capture the warm, sunny,
luminous quality of Newport Beach’s Back Bay as seen from a Southeastern viewpoint is the most successful. Twisting channels guide the viewer ‘s gaze from foreground into the depth of the bay where puffy clouds overhang a glowing horizon of violet and pink hills. This serenity seemed natural and appropriate to this
location.

Channel in the Back Bay
oil/canvas
11" x 14"
$400.00

This is another version of Half Bluff, Back Bay, one painted on a cloudy day from a different angle. The foreground is a strip of land crossed by a path which leads to the channel. The bluff now is seen across the width of the painting where it slowly descends to the water’s edge. Above a purple horizon the clouds appear hesitant in their destiny. Will they open up to further illuminate the scene - or remain hovering over Half Bluff?
One thing I am proud of is the painterliness of the painting- for example the brown brush strokes that describe the area where the half bluff meets the channel have a life beyond their usefulness as description.

Catching Butterflies
oil/canvas
19" x 23"
$400.00

Coast Headlands,Newport Beach. A thickly wooded portion of the headlands. Two people, partly shaded by a dense grove of eucalyptus
trees are holding butterfly nets. Large branches from these trees cross an incoming
roadway in the lower left corner of the painting.
They tie in with the two figures and help set the scale of the scene. The figures face each at some distance apart, and relate to each other by their shared activity.
I lived at Costa Mesa at this time and frequently walked to this headland to enjoy
the natural beauty of the place, which was undergoing a transformation into a cluster of private homes. Many of the paintings I did at this time were published in the masthead of
the coastal paper.

Framed in a beautiful light colored frame, matted in white, and covered with glass.

Twilight
oil/canvas
19" x 23"
$400.00

At 19 x 23” this oil painting was done on gesso coated paper and then glued to canvas.
The it is my first successful attempt at recording my response to the Back Bay and it’s
sometimes strange lighting affects. As I was
painting, the sky turned from blue to
greenish yellow. Most of my time and energy
went into adjusting the colors of other portions of the painting to the changes in the sky. Many of the paintings of local scenes I did at this time were published in the masthead of the local newspaper.

Framed in a beautiful light colored frame, matted in white, and covered with glass.

Two Jutting Points #2
oil/canvas
11" x 14"
$400.00

A second view of the Back Bay at Newport Beach , this one with a starker contrast between the dark foreground and the warm clouds in the distance. I liked the cloudy sky,
the dark bluff, and the incoming waves.
Most of all I enjoyed the cohesion between the
spatial layers: foreground, middle ground, and
background.
